The Bank of India’s roots weave through the fabric of Indian banking history. Founded in 1906, well before independence, it began as a private institution called the Bank of India. It emerged during a period of economic transition, catering to a growing Indian business class.
Initially headquartered in Mumbai, the Bank of India steadily expanded its footprint across the country. However, its story doesn’t exist in isolation. It co-existed with two other “Presidency Banks” established by the British Raj: the Bank of Bombay (1840) and the Bank of Madras (1843). These institutions played a crucial role in financing British colonial activities.
A significant turning point came in 1921 when these three Presidency Banks merged to form the Imperial Bank of India. This entity held a quasi-central bank status, serving as a financial anchor for the British administration.
Fast forward to India’s independence in 1947. The financial landscape underwent a massive transformation. In 1955, the government nationalized the Imperial Bank of India, renaming it the State Bank of India (SBI). This move consolidated India’s banking sector and established SBI as the largest public sector bank in the country.
While the Bank of India itself ceased to exist as a separate entity after the merger with SBI, its legacy lives on. It played a crucial role in laying the groundwork for a robust Indian banking system, contributing to the nation’s economic growth throughout the colonial and pre-independence era.
